Welcome

As Principal of Ovens National School, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our school website.

This site has been designed to provide you with the information needed to gain an understanding of the ethos and vision for our school, get a taste of what life is like for our pupils and see the range of activities that take place throughout the year.

Ovens N.S is a Catholic school under the patronage of the Bishop of Cork and Ross. We are a co-educational mainstream school and we currently have 443 students.

Ovens N.S has a warm, friendly and vibrant atmosphere where the focus remains on developing the moral, spiritual, physical, academic, aesthetic and cultural aspect of each individual student.

We are fortunate to be situated on a five acre site. This gives our pupils plenty of room to play during break times and P.E. We have a beautiful woodland area on the school grounds for nature studies and outdoor learning.

Ovens N.S. aims to provide its students and teachers with the best possible resources. We are lucky to have well equipped classrooms, a school hall, a computer room, an art room and a science room. In addition, we are very grateful to have access to Éire Óg G.A.A. club’s excellent facilities which are located next door to the school. These include an astro-turf pitch, four G.A.A. pitches and a large hall for performances.

We are very proud to be a school for all, a school that treats everyone as equal and a school that strives to provide the very best education possible for all our students. Our pupils take part in many events and competitions such as quizzes, dramas, music, robotics, coding and sport.

I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge our wonderful team in Ovens N.S. We are an innovative school drawing on the talents and skills of our staff to provide an extensive range of opportunities. Every member of our team strives every day to ensure all students are happy, cared for, valued and respected while delivering an exciting and structured educational programme. We have an active and supportive Parents’ Association and a wonderful community who collaborate with us in the best interests of the children.

A very busy time for Junior Infants in Ms. McCarthy’s. A visit to both 5th and 6th class science shows and hurling with Paddy!

6th class from Mr. Coppinger’s researched, designed and created some fantastic experiments as part of Science week. Some groups recorded videos of their experiments at home in case they didn’t work on the day! They showcased their experiments to many different classes throughout the school on Friday. @scienceweek2024

The two First classes from Ms. O Shea’s and Ms. Kenneally’s were very active in their class for Science Week creating cool geometric shapes with marshmallows and tooth picks, , observing a nest, making a rainbow from Skittles and much more. Fantastic work everyone!

Mr. Murphy’s 5th class organised a wonderful Science Fair. All classes from the school came to their room and were shown a selection of fun and interesting experiments. Many thanks to Mr. Murphy and his class for the brilliant experience!

Last week was Science Week and the school was buzzing with wonderful Science-themed activities. We will be sharing a sample of the fun! First up we have Second class pupils from Mr. McCarthy’s who had a great morning with Maria Young from Cork Healthy Cities. @greenspacescork3 @cork_healthy_cities They learned all about a Dunemann Box, leaf mould and the importance of planting native species where possible. We also planted some acorns and horse chestnuts and look forward to Maria’s return visit in the spring to see how the seeds are progressing. Maria also erected a twill that will be filled with leaves and used for next years planting. 6th class from Mr. Coppinger’s were busy learning about World War 1. They produced some impressive art work. They also worked collaboratively in groups and produced some fabulous projects. Well done!

It wasn’t to be for our two Sciath na Scol teams on Wednesday. The girls battled back heroically to bring their final to extra time before being pipped by a point. The boys had a very competitive final against a strong Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin team before losing gallantly. We are very proud of your efforts all year and you have been wonderful ambassadors for our school. Thanks so much to all the trainers, parents and the wonderful supporters who brought such fun, colour and song to the day!

Excitement is at fever pitch in Ovens as we prepare for tomorrow’s Sciath na Scol finals. The panels had their last training sessions today. The school has been draped in red and yellow while children have been busy creating flags, headbands and signs for the finals.The girls will be in action at 12:00pm and the boys will take to the field at 1:00pm. Whatever happens tomorrow we are immensely proud of all of you. Na hUamhanna Abú!

Miss McSweeney’s 3rd class were learning about bridges last week. They then worked together in groups to use recyclable materials to create their own bridges. Great engineering minds!

A huge thank you to Aoife Scally, Elaine Scally and Sadhbh McGoldrick from the Éire Óg senior football team who put on a fantastic training session for our girls Sciath na Scol team yesterday. A high tempo session and some inspirational words was just what the girls needed in their preparation for their Sciath na Scol final next week. Thank you also to the Aoife, Elaine and Sadhbh for coordinating with @scallyssupervalu & @supervalu_blackrock for providing the team with their own footballs to take home so they can continue to practise their skills. A lovely gesture that was very much appreciated.

6th class pupils displayed amazing creativity and imagination last Friday when they showcased their finished creations to the school. Lots of planning, designing and sourcing of various materials was involved in the creation of their costumes. Great enjoyment and fun was had by all. Happy Halloween!

On the last day before midterm we had a Halloween Dress-up Day in aid of the Crann Centre. The children pulled out all the stops with many creative and unique costumes and a grand total of €1141 was raised. Well done to everyone. Wishing everyone a fun, safe and magical night tonight. Junior Infants from Ms. Power’s have been super busy in recent weeks. They baked their own buns with lots of yummy toppings and also had a very interesting trip to our lovely woodland.

Our hardworking Student Council organised an art competition for Halloween. Children worked diligently on their creations and the standard of entries was so high. Well done to all the prize winners!

First Class from Ms. O Shea’s have been very busy practicing using chopsticks after learning about Japanese cultures and traditions. A pupil in the class travelled to Japan and brought back lots of first hand experiences. They even learned some Japanese!

🎶 Today, we had a real treat at the school as The Lamarotte Jazz Band from the Netherlands filled the air with toe-tapping, upbeat jazz! The kids had an amazing time dancing and singing. What a fantastic way to kick off Jazz Weekend! Thank you to @eireogcork for letting us use their facilities. Thank you @lamarottejazzband for bringing some jazz to our day!

To round off our Maths Week fun we have Ms. O Shea’s 1st class having lots of fun and learning opportunities during their time at the maths stations. Thanks to Ms. Brennan for organising and the 6th classes who helped with the different classes!

Junior Infants from Ms. McCarthy’s were very busy at the maths station with great help from 6th class. Ms. McSweeney’s 4th class also really enjoyed their time at the stations and were also hard at work on their class bar graphs. Each group took a tally of children for a particular favourite and then converted that information into a bar graph. Super job everyone!

Mr Dineen’s 6th class hosted a history museum on Friday. The children dressed up in the fashion of bygone days. Artefacts such as old coins, typewriters, telephones, All Ireland & County Medals, musical instruments including a beautiful violin and a 100 year old melodeon accordion, family albums, a model of a WW1 bi_plane, records/cassettes, vintage magazines, brooches, a telephone, family photographs, early Pokémon Cards and childrens' games, an old Communion dress, a belt from the War Of Independence and so much more took us down memory lane. Everyone had great fun and discovered so much about times past.

We have just completed a wonderful Maths Week here at Ovens with lots of fun maths-themed activities. We be sharing some photos from the week over the next few days. First up we have Mr. Coppinger’s 6th who had an outdoor maths trail around the school. It provided them with the opportunity to engage in fun activities and to experience Maths in the real world. @mathsireland

The best of luck to staff member Sean Meehan, current teaching practice student Colm O’Callaghan and Éire Óg player Chris Kelly who have been selected to represent the Munster Gaelic football team in the Railway Cup this weekend in Dublin. A tremendous honour and we are most proud of you all.
